The Mission on Tour

The Mission Tours present cutting edge new work from leading black British choreographers, representing the impressive array of talent and variety currently at large in black British dance. The intention is to present the contemporary black British experience from its many perspectives, to a wide audience, and to challenge misconceptions of black dance.

Mission Possible, 2009

Choreographers: Jeanefer Jean Charles, Kwesi Johnson, Colin Poole
Mission Possible toured for two seasons in 2009. This popular show exposed the male psyche, combining street, hip hop, physical theatre and contemporary dance. The choreographers put male relationships under the microscope, exploring role models and examining male perspectives on life, presenting a snapshot of young men in the 21st Century.

Mission Re-Position, 2007

Choreographers: Jeanefer Jean Charles, Menelva Harry, Louise Katerega, Zeze Kolstad. This showcase examined issues of womens’ identity, from the exploration of female stereotypes to the iconic achievements of women through history.

“Bringing the new face of black British dance to rural audiences”. Trans-Mission brought new, exciting, challenging and accessible black dance to rural audiences in a show specifically tailored to the needs of small scale venues.

The Mission, 2003

Choreographers: Maria Ryan, Irven Lewis, Bawren Tavaziva, Michael Joseph, Robert Hylton. The Mission 2003 brought together five leading young black choreographers, drawing on a pool of talent with rising reputations. All were formally trained but were influenced by the freestyle club and streetdance scenes, African and Caribbean culture, urban contemporary culture – all combining traditional and modern forms of dance. Each piece stood in its own right as an uncompromising statement on the richness and vitality of black dance and its ability to challenge our perceptions of modern life.

The Mission, 2001

Mission 2001 was a radical pioneering performance tour with educational programme that changed the landscape of contemporary dance. This tour paved the way for the support and development of black choreographers and their work in the UK over the coming years.
